Baseball Preview 2012: San Francisco Giants Roster Preview. Spolier: Many Good First Names

Tim Lincecum made the 2012 San Francisco Giants roster out of spring training.

The roster has been announced. Here is my advanced breakdown of your San Francisco Giants 2012 opening day roster. Or as giants blog McCovey Chronicles calls it, rosterbation.

Pitchers (12)
Jeremy Affeldt LHP: Silent ‘d’ in his name, always a crowd pleaser. He’s been as reliable as reliable can be for a left handed reliever the last couple years, just hope he can avoid the injury bug.
Madison Bumgarner LHP: He had the 4th best FIP (fielding independent pitching. It’s like ERA, except turns on nerds more) in MLB last season, and he’s only 22. He’s only 22. He’s only 22. He’s only 22. Like 2 and 2 but next to each other, without the ‘and’ in the middle. That should clarify things.
Matt Cain RHP: The biggest relief of the offseason was when Cain was signed to a 5 year extension through 2017. Here's a picture, framed and everything:

Santiago Casilla RHP: Hard throwing righty who was lights out in the spring. He adds to what should be a dominating bullpen. He also wins the award for best name. Casilla. Santiago Casilla. Casiiiiiillllaaaa. Moving on.
Clay Hensley RHP:  Made the bullpen after a good spring performance. His numbers have fluctuated in the big leagues, but should be a nice long relief option. Speaking of long relief, I need to poop.
Tim Lincecum RHP: He’s gone through stretches in the last 2 years when he’s been lost his command, and got roughed up a bit. But that’s nit picking. I would go to third base with his changeup. What are we talking about again?
Javier Lopez LHP: Another solid lefty like Affeldt. He also did this, to a hitter the Reds gave a 10 year 225 million dollar contract to. Click here.
Guillermo Mota RHP: Phenomenal first name, and yet another reliable pitcher out of the pen. He’s getting up their in age, but you could definitely do a lot worse. Guilllllllerrrrrmo. Phenomenal.
Dan Otero RHP: Holding a roster spot until Vogelsong comes back, but still a nice story for a 27 year old rookie.
Sergio Romo RHP: His facial hair is overshadowed by the closer, however his slider is one of the best strikeout pitches on the team. With him locking down the 8th inning, the Giants will be hard to catch in the late innings. They will have to score runs in that scenario however. Could be tough.
Brian Wilson RHP: He’s funny.
Barry Zito LHP: He’s funnier.
Catchers (2)
Buster Posey C: The Giants are counting on Posey to carry the offense this season, which I think is asking a lot for a player who had his ankle obliterated a year prior. That said, Buster Posey is back, which is a statement I’m going to say roughly 3 million times this week. Glorious.
Hector Sanchez C: Won the backup catcher job out of spring training, and should hit better than both Chris Stewart and Eli Whiteside. Gregory Wong should also hit better than Chris Stewart and Eli Whiteside.
Infielders (7)
Brandon Belt IF/OF: The biggest surprise of the season thus far, is that Belt is the starting first baseman for the Giants.  Last season, Bruce Bochy’s leash on Belt was shorter than the amount of time Charlie Sheen’s ever been sober. If the Giants just let Belt have some consistent major league playing time, he could be a potent offensive force.
Emmanuel Burriss IF: I was not nice to Emmanuel the other day. He’s a very friendly man and as a person, I would definitely hang out and play checkers with him. Unfortunately, his slugging percentage is close to -240. Not a dash, a negative.
Brandon Crawford IF: See Burris, Emmanuel.
Aubrey Huff IF/OF: A rigorous Yoga class has supposedly put Huff in better shape than last year. I know all of us would like to see photos of a sweaty Huff spreading his legs wide open during an intense stretching session. The good news is that’s not available and there’s nowhere to go but up for Huff from last year, and if he’s anything like the 2010 Huff, the offense will greatly improve.
Brett Pill IF/OF: Nice story, had a big year at AAA last season. Should be a nice option off the bench, and lets hope he doesn’t start at 1st after Belt’s first 0 for 4.
Pablo Sandoval IF: Yes.

Ryan Theriot IF: See Burris, Emmanuel.

Outfielders (4)
Gregor Blanco OF: Another well structured first name. Has a career OBP of .350, and should be a solid option off the bench.
Melky Cabrera OF: Last season was the first year he ever had a WAR over 1.7 with a 4.0 WAR, and in 2010 he had a negative WAR, meaning he was worse than the average replacement in AAA. Which Melky will we see in 2012? No clue, but if I was a betting man I would say somewhere in between 2009 and 2011 Melky. But really, another good first name. This is getting a little ridiculous.
Angel Pagan OF: Not sure if he likes the silent ‘g’ or not in his first name, but he’s going to be a middle class man’s 2010 Andres Torres. Not sure if people use that expression, but the point is he’s going to be a solid baseball player that’s going to help the Giants.
Nate Schierholtz OF: I can’t think of many things more boring than Nate Schierholtz. Maybe rocks? Sticks? Probably sticks.
