The Curious Case of the 49ers

For the first time that I can remember, the 49ers are going to play a relevant Monday Night Football game that is generating legitimate national buzz. If you were to tell me a year ago that Alex Smith would be interviewed by ESPN, I would of thought he was explaining why he left the NFL to become a graduation robe model. Instead, he’s explaining how the 49ers have become a Super Bowl contender. I’ve always thought Alex has gotten the short end of the stick. Not only am I on a first name basis with him, I also have a ton of respect for him after he hasn’t complained once while the 49ers try to fumble his future. I don’t think they could handle a number one overall draft pick any worse. Whether it be switching through terrible coordinators every year or hiring awful head coaches. Even if the 49ers drafted Aaron Rodgers (gulp) there's no guarantee he would've developed into the superstar he is today if the same inept coaches tried to develop him. I’m pretty sure this conversation happened last year:

Mike Singletary: “I don’t know what to do anymore Alex. I can’t just run it up the middle for no gain forever.”
Alex: “Maybe we should pass more”
Mike: “You’re such a softy.”
Alex: “But we’ll win more games”
Mike: “I’m not a fortune teller Alex”
Alex: “What?”
Mike: “I’m going to drop my pants”
Remember when Alex got benched for Troy Smith last year. Young Troy is now playing for the Omaha Nighthawks. I’m going to ignore the fact that it seems like someone playing World of Warcraft in their parent’s basement named that team, and remind you the Nighthawks are not in the NFL.
Finally this year, Jim Harbaugh arrived and did one of the best head coaching jobs for the 49ers since dare I say it…the Walsh days? That’s a little premature. But Harbaugh took the same team as last year, maybe even a worse team talent wise, and put it in a position for a first round bye. Simply amazing.

Here are some more deep thoughts from the weekend:
-       In yet another big move this offseason the Giants resigned Eli Whiteside. Everyone, call your friends, notify your neighbors, alert HBO because this spring training, Chris Stewart and Eli Whiteside are going to battle for the backup catcher job. Your 2012 Giants!
-       What a crappy offseason. The Giants not only didn’t sign a legitimate hitter to solidify the lineup, but now Brandon Belt has nowhere to play if the Giants continue to play the corpse of Aubrey Huff. On the bright side, Tebow should be available.
-       If you watched the New Orleans bowl (who amongst us didn’t on a Saturday night), then you’ll understand why the bowl season is simply fantastic. The game had everything one would want out of a football game except name brand schools. Lets be honest, it’s only a matter of time until The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin Cajuns just rolls off the tongue.
-       Even though it’s only preseason, the Clippers looked a thousand times better than the Lakers tonight. Besides a disgruntled not-as-good Kobe Bryant, an I-don’t-know-if-I’m-getting-traded Pau Gasol and the occasional Andrew Bynum, the Lakers are bereft of good players. I can just see this situation escalating: Bynum takes a game off, Kobe (who is already fuming at the lack of deals from the Lakers front office) gets in Bynum’s face at practice, Bynum objects and throws a haymaker at Kobe, the entire Lakers team gets into a brawl, Bynum is suspended for a year and one of the best trade assets is gone, the Lakers miss the playoffs as they get just 2 rebounds the entire year, Kobe finally gets traded and Mike Brown is found eating his sorrows away at a donut shop. And that was the end of the Kobe era Lakers. You heard it here first.
-       On a side note, it’s truly a shame that the Clippers traded Chris Kaman before tonight’s game. I will forever miss Pau Gasol and Kaman getting their ugly on in the low post against each other.
-       Can I request that Sportscenter not cover any more of the child molestation cases. Just leave that to Outside the Lines. I can’t imagine anyone saying “I cannot WAIT to get home to see the latest on the Sandusky trial! Cases involving inappropriately touching children just rivets me!”
-       The Raiders tumultuous crash continued as they forgot to cover Calvin Johnson during the Lions 98 yard game winning drive. It doesn’t get any easier as the Raiders have to play a rejuvenated Chiefs team on the road, and then finish up at home against an equally rejuvenated Chargers team. In the last four games the Raiders only win was against the Caleb Hanie Chicago Bears. Plus, the Raiders have to hope that Tebow loses, and Philip Rivers becomes the first ¾ of the season Philip Rivers. If it maks the Raiders feel better, they’re a killer Madden team.
-       Finishing up on a non-sports related topic, one of my favorite headlines of the weekend was Rick Perry calling Kim Jong Il “Kim Jong the Second"
