Peyton Manning was released from the Colts today. Read that again. You probably didn’t do that, but that’s not the point. The point is, that Peyton Manning was released from the Colts today. You're welcome. I won’t make you read it again because I’m kind hearted and all that, but hypothetically if you were to read that for what would then be your third time, I know one thing you would think: it’s yucky. That’s the best word I can come up with when describing that sentence. Yuckity yuck yuck. Peyton Manning not playing for the Colts is yucky.
I grew up watching the likes of Ken Dorsey, Tim Rattay and Chris Winkie play quarterback for the 49ers. In case you’re not well versed in mid-2000 second string quarterback names, they are the equivalent of being forced to watch Santa Claus Conquers the Martians on loop, which is the 81st worst movie of all time according to IMDB. Like you, I’ve never seen that movie, but I’m assuming its about Santa Claus conquering the Martians, which would lead me to believe there had to be some production meeting where one bright Hollywood employee said “you know what the public needs? A good ole’ fashioned Santa and the Martians movie. Everyone loves that!”
So naturally, Peyton Manning saved me. I could count on watching him every week bark out signals, dissect defenses like he was taking out its appendix, and win. I thought, ‘why can’t Tim Rattay do that?’ Then I thought, oh yeah, he’s Tim Rattay. The fact that a team can outright release, fire, cut, a man that good, a man who made football in Indianapolis, doesn’t seem right to me. I know why the Colts released him. Nobody knows what Peyton Manning we are getting after 3 neck surgeries, and the best quarterback prospect since John Elway is eligible for the draft.
However, if I were Jim Irsay, I wouldn’t cut Peyton. No way. 3 years ago he won his third MVP. 2 years ago he was undefeated in the regular season, went to the Superbowl and won his 4th MVP . One year ago he made the playoffs for the eighth straight year. Then in 2011, we saw how good the Colts really were without Peyton Manning, finishing with a 2-14 record. That same player is being outright released.
Andrew Luck may be John Elway. He may end up being one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. But what would be so wrong with making him wait in front of somebody we know is one of the greatest quarterback ever. Instead you want Luck at the helm for the worst team in 2011-12 season? If Irsay picked up Peyton’s bonus this year and Peyton fizzles out, so what? Irsay would have good reason to release him and Luck would have learned from a 4-time MVP. The upside is a Super Bowl championship. That’s how good Peyton is. 49ers take note.
Peyton Manning could tell the city of Indianapolis that Voldemort came out of a Harry Potter DVD and is coming to invade Indy the day after tomorrow. The next thing you know, everyone in the city would have their bags packed and ready to move. That same guy is getting cut from his job in Indy. I’m glad I’m not in the labor force.
